“Pulling Back the Curtain: A Cautionary Tale”

We live in an incredible time period for the fire service. Never before have there been resources at our disposal to better understand the profession of firefighting. Manufacturers are investing in products that will change our abilities on the fireground. Engineers are delving into

the essence of what fire is and how it reacts to the world around us. Fire departments are adjusting their operations to be better aligned with the modern challenges. There is a great deal of positive energy, yet there is an undertone persisting that attempts to undermine these advancements. What is that force?

‚ÄčThat force is us, the inherently flawed human being. We can recognize and accept those flaws and become more aware or we can allow the undercurrent to sweep away those bona fide sensibilities. Our perceptions of the world around us drive what we believe to be true. When we “pull back the curtain" and expose those perceptions in the true light of day, what will we find?

Is the fire service the most proactive, progressive organization or is it existing in the foundation of the norm?

When we speak of bravery, it can come in many forms. Do you have the courage to look behind the curtain, to question what you have been taught, to embrace the new-found knowledge and to become the best firefighter you can be?

Captain John Ceriello is a 29-year veteran of the FDNY, with 14 of those years in Special Operations Command. He has been an integral part in the FDNY & NIST Wind-Impacted Fires Project that introduced stairwell pressurization, wind control devices and high-rise nozzles into the field. Ceriello is on Underwriter Laboratories advisory panel for a number of projects.
