Managing Principal, architecture
As we work in the garden and I exuberantly and nonchalantly pull up weeds, my wife Deborah gently reminds me that some of what I am pulling up are precious to her; that my weeds are her flowers. Much of life is this way. A simple shift in perspective changes everything.
I've been happily working for forty years planning and designing facilities for the mentally ill; a building type that for most of that time was seen as nothing but weeds, or worse. Join me for a conversation about how shifting perspectives can influence design directions, change a life's work, and influence the lives of others.
Francis (Frank) Murdock Pitts is the founding partner and President of architecture+. He has earned a national reputation for his work with psychiatric hospital design and planning as well as design for special populations, long term care, and secure institutions. With over thirty years of experience with this project type, Frank has been involved in a broader range of psychiatric hospital design projects than anyone in North America including recent hospitals in Vermont and Massachusetts with new hospitals being built in Columbus, Ohio and Evanston, Wyoming. His recent psychiatric hospital design work was featured in recently published field survey books by Stephen Verderber and Mardelle Shepley. Frank was named the 2018 Changemaker by the Center for Health Design.
Our closing keynote will change your perspective on mental health.
Francis Murdock Pitts, FAIA, buys his groceries by serving as the Managing Principal of architecture+, a 40-ish person collective pretending to be a capitalist organization.
architecture+ has been named a ‘Best Place to Work’ in New York’s Capital Region for each of the past nine years. Architect magazine ranked architecture+ as number 32 in their listing of the top 50 firms nationally on the basis of business and cultural practices.
Mr. Pitts has earned a small reputation for his skills in designing libraries (he's an avid reader) and for his work with facilities designed for the mentally ill, developmentally disabled, and criminally insane (to know him is to understand why). Postponing the onset of a (now late) midlife crisis, Mr. Pitts has served as the President of the AIA’s Academy of Architecture for Health and the American College of Healthcare Architects. He recently served as National Vice President of the American Institute of Architects. In 2018, Frank was named the Changemaker Award Recipient by the Center for Health Design.
