Jackie Clay-Atkinson

ackie is a full time homesteader from northern Minnesota. She is also a longtime writer for Backwoods Home Magazine. She has been writing feature articles for the magazine since 1995 and has answered questions about canning and other self-reliant topics in her “Ask Jackie” column since 1999. She also maintains an online blog at the magazine’s website,, letting readers across the globe catch glimpses of what is going on at their homestead. She is frequent speaker throughout the country on all aspects of homesteading, especially gardening and home canning. She and her husband, Will, grow about 80 percent of their own food on their 120 acre homestead, including two acres of gardens, another large orchard, berry patch and livestock such as goats, cattle, pigs, chickens and turkeys. Much of this food is neatly canned up and stored in their pantry, enabling them to eat like kings but for very little cash outlay. Jackie has written many books on animal care, canning, homesteading and three western novels.
