A 12-day fair is held at the fairgrounds annually during October. The primary focus of the fair is to serve as a showcase of the talents of the youth and citizens of the state by providing them with a means of education, exhibition and competition involving arts, crafts, culinary, horticultural, and various livestock projects in which the youth and citizens of the state are involved. The fair strives to create an event that celebrates an atmosphere of responsible community involvement and citizenship.
The annual fair also highlights the heritage of the state, and its ties to agriculture, industry, and business. The Fair's central location in Columbia, in the middle of the state, provides a gathering place for all South Carolina communities to showcase their best resources, their youth, agriculture and a sense of community in addition to their products and skills.
The State Agricultural and Mechanical Society of South Carolina, an eleemosynary institution owned and controlled by life members, is responsible for the establishment of the South Carolina State Fair, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to educating South Carolina's young adults.
