Background on NAIHC
The NAIHC was founded in 1974 and for over four decades has provided invaluable Training and Technical Assistance (T&TA) to all tribes and tribal housing entities; provided information to Congress regarding the issues and challenges that tribes face in their housing, infrastructure, and community development efforts; and worked with key federal agencies to ensure their effectiveness in native communities.
Overall, NAIHC’s primary mission is to support tribal housing entities in their efforts to provide safe, decent, affordable, and culturally appropriate housing for Native people.
NAIHC Advocacy Mission:
National American Indian Housing Council, represents the unique and historic interests of tribes and tribally designated housing entities on American Indian and Alaska Native housing issues.
To maintain relationships with Members of Congress and their staff.
To maintain a relationship with the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development.
To provide advocacy to tribes and tribally designated housing entities.
To represent NAIHC before the Congress and the federal government to advocate for legislation and policy favorable to American Indian and Alaska Native housing needs.
NAIHC offers a variety of training options specific to the needs of the Indian housing industry. Since 1987, our Leadership Institute has offered training that meets the needs of tribal housing professionals. NAIHC also offers specialized training on a regional basis and at our annual convention.
Additionally, requests for on-site training can be accommodated through our Technical Assistance Program. All of the training offered by NAIHC is taught by experienced instructors who have worked in the Indian housing industry for many years.
NAIHC provides both on- and off-site technical assistance free of charge at the request of any tribe or tribal housing entity who receives Indian Housing Block Grant (IHBG) funding under the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-determination Act (NAHASDA). This service is made available through a Cooperative Agreement with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Office of Native American Programs.
