Walworth, WI (June 27, 2015)  Following the inaugural auction that featured standing-room-only crowds and more than $12 million in sales, Mecum Auctions, the world’s largest collector car auction company, will return to Denver July 8-9 at the Colorado Convention Center. An estimated 700 American muscle cars, classics, Corvettes, Hot Rods, Resto Mods and more are expected to cross the auction block from approximately 15 surrounding states.

Leading the main attraction cars consigned for Mecum Denver 2016 is a 1970 Buick GSX Stage 1 (Lot S36) finished in Saturn Yellow paint that holds the distinction of being a two-time GS Club of America Nationals winner. This striking muscle car includes the rare dealer-installed Stage II package and is motivated by a matching-numbers 455/360-horsepower V8 engine. Another rare car that is available for bid is a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette convertible (Lot S110) that is one of only 267 equipped with J56 power brakes. Powered by a big-block 427/390-horsepower V8 engine, the Sunfire Yellow Corvette convertible features a host of options, including factory air conditioning. Completing the triumvirate of headliners is a 2006 Ford GT Heritage Edition finished in blue-and-orange Gulf Oil livery and powered by a 5.4-liter supercharged V8 engine producing 550 horsepower. The GT Heritage Edition is a factory Ford tribute to John Wyer Racing, the team that captured the 24 Hours of Le Mans in in both 1968 and 1969 in the legendary Gulf-liveried GT40 #1075.

Walworth, WI (July 1, 2015) Mecum Auctions’ first-ever Denver-area auction brought enthusiasts flocking to the Colorado Convention Center leading to standing-room only crowds both days, June 26-27. With 396 cars sold, a 66 percent sell-through rate was achieved and overall sales totals reached $12,003,418.

                 “We were excited to bring the Mecum Auction action to the Denver area, and the reception from nearly 14,000 enthusiasts in the Rocky Mountain Region and beyond was overwhelmingly positive,” says Dana Mecum, president and founder of Mecum Auctions. “This auction was an excellent inaugural event with strong sales and consignments coming from 27 states. We look forward to finalizing details on our return to the Denver area in 2016.”

Sales were topped by a first-year Lamborghini Aventador (Lot S105.1) sporting just 8,459 actual miles. Hammering for a high bid of $285,000, the bold Orange supercar presented in like-new condition equipped with a V12 capable of producing a whopping 810 horsepower. Demanding a $200,000 sale price was a unique and fully-customized 1962 Western Pacific 40-foot Airstream trailer (Lot S109). The mid-century modern-styled trailer was restored by Timeless Travel Trailers and is believed to be only one of five of its kind left in public possession. Other top sales included a 1969 Pontiac Trans Am Ram IV (Lot S114) that brought $180,000 and a 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster (Lot S93) that changed hands for $165,000.

Denver Takes First Step Toward $100 + Million Expansion Of The Colorado Convention Center

DENVER (June 3, 2015) – The City of Denver took the first step yesterday toward placing an initiative on the November 3, 2015 ballot asking Denver voters to extend two existing taxes that are set to expire in 2023 with the provision that the funds will be used immediately to improve the Colorado Convention Center and replace facilities at the National Western Complex.

Richard W. Scharf, president & CEO of VISIT DENVER, said, “For more than two decades, the center has been the goose laying the golden eggs, driving economic impact and creating jobs.  We need to stay competitive and adjust to the changing trends and technologies.” 

A year-long study by the Strategic Advisory Group (SAG) with input from national meeting professionals, stakeholders and industry experts was completed in March 2014. The SAG study found that the Colorado Convention Center was still considered one of the top meeting facilities in the nation, but to stay competitive, the center would benefit from three improvements:

  • New meeting and ballroom space featuring panoramic city and mountain views with outdoor gathering space
  • Additional business networking and specialty space to take advantage of the city’s natural beauty throughout the center
  • Improvements in technology throughout the center that will expand bandwidth and Wi-Fi access to accommodate growing demand, allowing for more online video streaming and supporting new crowd-sourcing technology
  • The study stated that these improvements could bring an additional $50 million in direct economic impact annually.  Denver is currently conducting a master plan for the Colorado Convention Center, reviewing all possible locations in the building and possible designs for the improvements, which have been roughly estimated at slightly more than $100 million.  Funds for both projects will become available as early as 2016.

“Denver has hired MIG and Fentress Architects, the original architects of the center, who are reviewing the recommendations of the SAG study and will have a complete program by August 2015,” Scharf said.

“We were pleased to see how highly regarded the convention center is by meeting professionals, but this is a constantly evolving industry. The charge we gave SAG was to tell us what we need to do for the Colorado Convention Center to continue to be successful and competitive for the next 25 years.  They accomplished that, and this ballot measure will put the financing in place to make those recommendations possible,” Scharf said.

The Colorado Convention Center celebrates its 25th anniversary this month, having opened its doors in June 1990.  It is credited with generating more than $500 million in annual economic impact – $4.8 billion since the center was expanded in 2005.  The center has also been the catalyst for many of the improvements in downtown Denver, which has more than 3,000 hotel rooms within a block of the center and more than 10,000 within walking distance. 

Scharf said it’s too early to announce dates for the opening of any new facilities.  “We will have a better idea in August 2015 of possible scope for expansion and improvements, and then in November 2015, we look forward to having Denver voters approve these projects for the future,” he said.

The study also confirmed the results of previous studies in finding that most of the facilities at the National Western Stock Show site need to be replaced. SAG recommended a multipurpose facility with a new arena, stockyards, horse show facilities and an exhibition hall at the site, which is located three miles from downtown and will become a future commuter rail stop.

Colorado Ranks Second State In Nation for LEED Green Building Per Capita

Washington, DC (February 2, 2015) Today, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) released its annual ranking of the Top 10 States in the nation for LEED, the world’s most widely used and recognized green building rating system, with the state of Colorado placing second.

The per-capita list highlights states throughout the country that are making impactful strides in sustainable building design, construction and transformation. LEED-certified spaces use less energy and water resources, save money for families, businesses and taxpayers, reduce carbon emissions and create a healthier environment for residents, workers and the larger community.

“Every story about a green building is a story about people,” said Rick Fedrizzi, CEO and founding chair, USGBC. “USGBC’s annual recognition of the Top 10 States for LEED goes beyond gross square feet or number of projects and factors in LEED’s potential in a given state to be part of the daily life of the state’s residents. This per-capita approach tells a great story about how LEED has become an important benchmark in the transformation of the nation’s built environment. LEED certified buildings and the innovations they have driven contribute substantially to our national economic growth, create jobs and improve the quality of life in the communities where they are found. We commend the business and community leaders, policy makers and green building professionals in each of these states for making the commitment to create a healthier, more sustainable future.

“Colorado has so many committed business and community leaders, policy makers and green building professionals who are using LEED to transform their built environment, producing many innovative spaces that will improve the health of our shared planet, as well as the health of the people who use those buildings every day,” added Fedrizzi.

The per-capita list is based on 2010 U.S. Census data and includes commercial and institutional green building projects that were certified throughout 2014. Colorado certified 102 projects representing 15,816,498 square feet of real estate, or 3.15 square feet per resident, in 2014.

USGBC calculates the list using per-capita figures as a measure of the human element of green building, allowing for a fair comparison of the level of green building taking place among states with significant differences in population and, accordingly, number of overall buildings.

“It is no surprise that the Centennial State continues to be a trailblazer for LEED certifications, and we are so proud to have made significant strides in the 2014 rankings earning the No. 2 position on the list,” said Sharon Alton, executive director of the USGBC Colorado Chapter. “From cutting edge projects like Union Station that are reimagining Denver’s downtown to the Colorado Convention Center which showcases sustainability for visitors to our state, Coloradoans have always prioritized the health of our built environment. As the rest of the country eyes Colorado’s intrinsic attributes and the regional economy continues to experience an upswing, we look forward to continuing to push the envelope in green building.”

  • Kaiser Permanente Lone Tree Medical Offices in Lone Tree, LEED Silver
  • University of Colorado’s Kittredge Central Hall in Boulder, LEED Gold
  • 1900 Sixteenth Street in Denver, LEED Platinum
  • Denver Museum of Nature & Science’s Morgridge Family Exploration Center in Denver, LEED Platinum
  • 1670 Broadway in Denver, LEED Gold

There are more than 306 USGBC member organizations with a headquarters in Colorado and more than 7,205 LEED credentialed professionals in the state.

Collectively, 1,662 commercial and institutional projects became LEED certified within the top 10 states in 2014, representing 251.7 million square feet of real estate. Worldwide, 4,502 projects were certified in 2014, representing 675.7 million square feet.

More than 26,600 projects representing 3.6 billion square feet of space have been LEED-certified to date, with another 42,000 projects representing 8.8 billion square feet in the pipeline for certification. USGBC launched LEED v4, the newest version of the rating system, in the fall of 2013. The latest version continues to raise the bar for the entire green building industry, which Forbes Magazine projects could be worth up to $960 billion globally by 2023. LEED v4 features increased technical rigor; new market sector adaptations for data centers, warehouses and distribution centers, hospitality, existing schools, existing retail and midrise residential projects; and a simplified submittal process supported by a robust and intuitive technology platform.
