Mayor Bowser Officially Proclaims ‘Rock the Red’ Day in DC

PRESS RELEASE

Mayor Bowser Officially Proclaims ‘Rock the Red’ Day in DC

Washington, DC (April 13, 2016)  Today Mayor Muriel Bowser was joined by the Washington Capitals, including owner Ted Leonsis, and Events DC as she officially proclaimed April 14th ‘Rock the Red’ Day in the District of Columbia in front of hundreds of fans at the Carnegie Library.

The proclamation marks the beginning of the Capitals’ playoff run and celebrates a successful regular season where they finished the 2015-16 National Hockey League (NHL) campaign as Presidents’ Trophy winners with the best regular-season record. The team also set a new franchise record for wins.

“DC isn’t just the nation’s capital, because with help from the Capitals, we’re also the sports capital,” said Mayor Bowser. “This is an exciting time for the District and ‘Rock the Red’ is a fun way to support our hometown hockey team in their pursuit of the Stanley Cup. I’m counting on DC residents to wear red tomorrow - to work, to school, or when you’re out and about in the city. It’s time to show all the teams that Washingtonians are the best fans in the NHL!”

To show its support, the District will light up buildings in red on Thursday – including the John A. Wilson Building. Fans, businesses, and residents are also encouraged to wear red during the playoffs.

The top-seeded Capitals will host the Philadelphia Flyers starting tomorrow, April 14th, at the Verizon Center at 7 p.m. This is the fifth time the Capitals and Flyers have met in the postseason and the first playoff meeting between the teams since 2008.

“Washington Capitals fans have been eagerly awaiting the playoffs, and it’s great to see Mayor Bowser, members of D.C. City Council and Greg O’Dell of Events DC being so supportive,” said Ted Leonsis, Monumental Sports & Entertainment founder and Washington Capitals majority owner. “Verizon Center and the surrounding communities are electric this time of year, and we are all excited to Rock the Red and shine the light on our great city and fantastic fans.”

To date, the team has also sold out 311 games in a row, a true testament to their dedicated fan base. Since 2008, ‘Rock the Red' has symbolized the experience of a Washington Capitals game, its passionate fans, and a team forced to be reckoned with.

“As the official convention and sports authority for Washington, DC, we are thrilled to celebrate and applaud the Washington Capitals on their historic season,” said Gregory A. O’Dell, Events DC president and chief executive officer. “We enthusiastically encourage individuals, organizations and neighborhoods throughout the District to show their support for the Capitals and wish them the best of luck in their quest for a Stanley Cup.”

Greenbuild Releases 2015 Sustainability Report

PRESS RELEASE

Greenbuild Releases 2015 Sustainability Report

Dallas, TX (April 8, 2016) Informa Exhibitions U.S., Construction and Real Estate and the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) have released the 2015 Greenbuild Sustainability Report, highlighting valuable metrics and key benchmarks regarding the impact on energy use and waste management at the 2015 Greenbuild International Conference and Expo, held last fall at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.

The comprehensive report details the sustainability programs implemented in 2015 through a review of all objectives, goals and best practices. Case studies provide detailed overviews of sustainability strategies and initiatives including attendee and stakeholder engagement, attendee wellness, waste diversion calculation and more. The report can be accessed online at www.greenbuildexpo.com.

“Sustainability is the heart and soul of Greenbuild and we are committed to leading the industry in environmentally responsible management in the planning, operations and execution of Greenbuild,” stated Lindsay Roberts, Greenbuild show director, Informa. “With the release of this report, we celebrate our victories and look forward to opportunities to make an even greater impact at Greenbuild 2016.”

“The Greenbuild Sustainability Report showcases the hard work and dedication we bring to our efforts to reduce waste and energy use, address our carbon footprint and engage our many stakeholders leading up to and during Greenbuild,” said Kate Hurst, vice president, community advancement, conferences and events, USGBC. "As we hosted Greenbuild for the first time ever in our hometown, Washington, D.C., we were proud to leave a legacy of collective accomplishment behind. Greenbuild is a time for our entire community and industry to come together around our ideals, to demonstrate our commitment to the cause of green building for all within this generation, and to inspire others to acknowledge that even small changes in behavior can have a significant and meaningful impact when undertaken collaboratively.”

“It was such an honor to host Greenbuild 2015 in the U.S. Green Building Council’s hometown at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center and to partner with them on taking their robust sustainability efforts even higher,” said Gregory A. O’Dell, president and chief executive officer of Events DC, which owns and operates the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. “Events DC sustains a strong commitment to sustainability efforts and the Walter E. Washington Convention Center remains at the forefront of implementing environmentally-friendly initiatives to help reduce our carbon footprint. We applaud Greenbuild on their continued steps in making a greater impact on the health and wellbeing of our environment for years to come.”
The report shares the progress of seven sustainability objectives at Greenbuild, including the following highlights:

• Waste Management: Informa Exhibitions, USGBC, Aramark, Centerplate/NBSE, Freeman and local haulers worked together to optimize waste management strategies resulting in an overall 84% percent diversion rate. This was a 52% increase over the convention center’s baseline diversion rate. These efforts included recycling and composting in kitchen areas, adding additional waste streams, upgraded recycling/compost stations with improved signage in public areas,

• Stakeholder Engagement: New in 2015 was an interactive greening wall which allowed attendees to learn more about specific sustainability initiatives. The display was an LCD, ENERGY STAR certified touchscreen located next to a mini green wall. The Greenbuild team engages its vendors in a 3-phase sustainability planning process in the year leading up to the show in order to set and meet conference sustainability goals.

Sustainable Sourcing: Thanks to the efforts of the Centerplate Team at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, 33% of the food served at the convention center was sourced locally (within 100 miles) and 70% of the food was sourced regionally (within 500 miles).

Performance Tracking: USGBC and Informa collected post show sustainability reports from vendors and partners and improved information collection in attendee registration to more accurately calculate our carbon footprint.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions: For the second year, Greenbuild showcased the “Net Zero Zone”— a 3,200 square foot pavilion powered by solar panels, installed on-site at the Washington Convention Center. In partnership with TerraPass, the following projects were supported by Greenbuild’s carbon offset purchase: New Beulah Landfill (Dorchester County, MD) and The Big Smile Wind Farm at Dempsey Ridge (Roger Mills and Beckham Counties, OK).

Community Impact: The 2015 Greenbuild Legacy Project, led by USGBC-NCR and the Greenbuild Host Committee, was an Urban Food Studio at the Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB). The CAFB provides food assistance to one out of every twelve individuals living in Virginia, Maryland and D.C., distributing 42 million pounds of food per year. The multi-purpose Studio will provide an all-season space for cooking, gardening and workshops. The structure uses recycled materials and features a water collection system and solar harvesting.

Hospitality Industry: This year, Greenbuild hosted a “Greenbuild Behind the Scenes: Sustainable Event Tour” to showcase the show’s sustainability efforts to hospitality professionals. The 34 attendees included representatives from hotels, national associations, and international conference organizers. Attendees toured a variety of show areas including the back dock sorting area and convention center control rooms. Additionally, 68% of the hotels in the Greenbuild room block were GreenLeader certified by TripAdvisor.

Greenbuild, owned and operated by Informa and presented by USGBC, is the world's largest conference and expo dedicated to green building. The three-day conference attracts 20,000 attendees and 600 exhibitors annually from across the green building sector, spanning commercial and residential professionals, architects, building owners and operators, students, advocates and educators. This year’s conference takes place at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, CA.

Events DC Reveals RFK Stadium-Armory Campus Masterplan Concepts

PRESS RELEASE

Events DC Reveals RFK Stadium-Armory Campus Masterplan Concepts

Washington, DC (April 6, 2016) Events DC, the official convention and sports authority for the District of Columbia, announced on Monday evening, the details of two conceptual plans for the 190-acre RFK Stadium-Armory Campus site, with design concepts by OMA New York, led by partner Jason Long, in partnership with DC-based program management team, Brailsford & Dunlavey. Located in the Southeast corridor of the District, the transformational vision for the iconic RFK Campus delivers holistic concepts for the site that leverage the District’s waterfront, provide neighborhood serving amenities and connect the current site with increased and sustainable green space, flexible recreational fields and natural access to pedestrian-friendly paths. The conceptual planning effort also envisions phasing the implementation of short-term and long-term program elements for the site.

“After extensive planning, outreach, public input and involvement, the entire Events DC board and staff are so proud to present these two conceptual plans for the RFK Stadium-Armory Campus,” said Max Brown, chairman of the Board of Directors for Events DC. “Our vision for the Campus’ future –which is aligned with community wants and needs - is to create a special and amazing place that celebrates the District of Columbia’s beauty and history – while also acting as a shining example of urban living that can attract residents and visitors, while at the same time, maintain the rich and strong local identity that currently is appreciated and valued by all of us.”

Events DC, in collaboration with OMA New York and Brailsford and Dunlavey, participated in a series of stakeholder and community engagement sessions that focused on capturing input on a new urban vision for the 190-acre Campus surrounding the historic RFK Stadium, Festival Grounds and the DC Armory. The site benefits from its positioning adjacent to the National Mall axis, prominent neighborhoods and its access to a waterfront gateway along the Anacostia River which has been underutilized for decades.

“The conceptual plans we have unveiled present a once in a lifetime opportunity to reimagine the 190-acre site in a way that delivers an amenity for everyone. It also has the ability to create another vibrant destination within Washington, DC for residents and visitors to enjoy,” said Gregory A. O’Dell, president and chief executive officer of Events DC. “Our conceptual plans aim to provide accessibility across the Campus’ unique topography and access to nearby waterways while creating dynamic open space.”

The conceptual plans are represented through two design concepts (a) North-South Axis and (b) Stitch, each illustrating a different configuration or layout of the site. These design concepts offer two alternative approaches to addressing parking, infrastructure and road network, pedestrian connections, site conditions and program placement.

Within both the North-South Axis and Stitch design concepts, there are three anchor tenant scenarios: (a) 20k Seat Arena, (b) NFL Stadium, and (c) No Anchor. All three scenarios reflect a phased approach intended to provide short-term programming elements that will immediately activate the site with uses that will serve the community. Such short-term program uses, which exist in both the North-South Axis and Stitch design concepts, include sport, recreation, culture and park space.

The long-term opportunities for the North-South Axis and Stitch design concepts offer an extension of all of the program elements delivered in the short-term, plus additional long-term program elements, inclusive of an anchor tenant and the related supporting site and infrastructure enhancements.

Jason Long, OMA New York’s partner-in-charge, commented, “Our goal for both design concepts is to reconnect the Campus to existing neighborhoods to the north and south, to bring the District closer to the Anacostia waterfront and to transform the site from a space designed for watching sports, dominated by asphalt, into a new gateway to DC that elevates public health with diverse recreational programming. Both concepts provide a strategy for revitalizing the Campus’ identity from passive space to active place and transform its urban character from pavement to park.”

“Brailsford & Dunlavey is honored to have served Events DC in leading such a talented team of professionals to re-envision the future of the storied RFK Campus. Events DC made a commitment to a deliberate and thoughtful approach to urban planning, fostering collaboration and inclusiveness with project stakeholders and embracing both internationally acclaimed planning inspiration and a pragmatic focus on technical and economic feasibility,” said Chris Dunlavey, president of Brailsford & Dunlavey. “We look forward to the continued development of this unique opportunity for the District.”

Both design concepts will be evaluated based on feedback received during the citywide meeting that was held on Monday, April 4. As a next step, Events DC will consolidate and post the comments, questions and answers received during the citywide meeting. In addition, Events DC, Brailsford & Dunlavey and OMA New York will provide revisions to the concepts as appropriate and perform a financial feasibility analysis for the program elements.

“I’m thrilled to be making my pro debut on May 13 at the DC Armory,” said Rock. “My team and I have worked hard and it has all been building up to this moment. I’m looking forward to my rise to the top of the heavyweight division which begins on May 13.”

Hailing from Washington, D.C., Dusty Hernandez-Harrison has been touted as the city’s “best boxing prospect since Sugar Ray Leonard” by the Washingtonian Magazine. He began fighting at the age of six at the boxing exhibition at the Ritz Nightclub in Northwest D.C. and became a sanctioned amateur at the age of 8. At the time of his first pro bout at the age of 17, Hernandez-Harrison compiled an amateur record of 167-30, winning several Ringside World Championships, National Silver Gloves Championships and three straight National Golden Gloves Championships from 2007-09. On June 11, 2011, as the youngest licensed professional fighter at the time, Hernandez-Harrison made his pro debut defeating Alphonso Alexander via a unanimous decision at the Desoto Civic Center in Southaven, Mississippi. Six months later in his third pro fight, Hernandez-Harrison made his hometown debut on the undercard of the HBO World Championship Boxing broadcast of Amir Khan vs. Lamont Peterson and dazzled with a first round technical knockout of Terrell Davis. On his way to being crowned WBC Youth Welterweight World Champion in November 2013, Hernandez-Harrison stopped former National Golden Gloves Champion Kelly Wright in the fourth round in February of that year and two weeks later defeated Aaron Anderson via a six-round unanimous decision. In April 2013 at Dover Downs Casino and Resort in Dover, Delaware, he won a unanimous decision against Puerto Rico’s Jonathan Garcia and on May 18 in front of a raucous hometown crowd of 3,000 at the University of the District of Colombia, he knocked out Eddie Soto with a right hand in the fifth round. Hernandez-Harrison proceeded to earn the “2013 Knockout of the Year” for the Soto fight and the “2013 Fighter of the Year” from Go Fight Live (GFL.TV). On November 2, 2013 at Madison Square Garden, Hernandez-Harrison became the WBC Youth World Champion, winning a ten-round, unanimous decision over Josh “Pit Bull” Torres. Two months later, in his first nationally televised fight on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights, Hernandez-Harrison outlasted Tim Witherspoon Jr. via an eighth round unanimous decision victory, after which actor and director Mark Wahlberg tweeted that Hernandez-Harrison is “the truth.” Featured again on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights on March 7, 2014, Hernandez-Harrison faced southpaw Mike Balasi and came back to drop Balasi to the canvas twice en route to a six-round unanimous decision victory. On January 9, 2015, soon after signing a promotional agreement with Roc Nation Sports, Hernandez-Harrison headlined the promoter’s inaugural event at The Theater at Madison Square in a fight televised by Fox Sports 1. In a battle for the vacant WBC Continental Americas Welterweight Championship against New Yorker Tommy “The Razor” Rainone, Hernandez-Harrison scored a dominant ten-round unanimous decision victory. In his most recent fight on January 29, 2016, Hernandez-Harrison scored a decisive win over Angel Hernandez via a third round technical knockout at The Belvedere in Elk Grove, Illinois. Hernandez-Harrison recently entered into agreements with FILA and GEICO to be a brand ambassador for both companies. He is the only professional boxer to represent each prestigious brand.

Mike Dallas Jr. was born into a boxing family and tabbed by experts during his teen years as a future professional star. At age 29, he’s in the midst of a comeback that lands him in Washington, D.C. against local unbeaten favorite Dusty Hernandez-Harrison that may be the most important fight of his life. As an amateur, Dallas shared a ring with current world champions Terence Crawford (whom Dallas claims he beat three times) and Danny Garcia as well as three-time U.S. Olympian Rau’shee Warren. He won multiple national amateur titles and qualified for the 2004 and 2008 Olympic trials. Dallas turned professional on March 20, 2008 against Alejandro Valladares in San Jose, California and won by unanimous decision. He would go unbeaten in his next 17 fights. When he faced Josesito Lopez for the vacant NABF super lightweight title on January 28, 2011 in his national television debut on ESPN at Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, California, he was shockingly stopped in the seventh round. Five months later, Dallas met fellow rising contender Mauricio Herrera. In an excellent fight, again at Pechanga Resort and Casino, Dallas lost by a razor thin majority decision. Despite the setback, Dallas’ performance showed boxing experts he was back to contender status.

Doubleheader of Super Middleweight Title Fights Set for Saturday, April 30 Live on Showtime from The DC Armory in Washington, D.C.

PRESS RELEASE

Doubleheader of Super Middleweight Title Fights Set for Saturday, April 30 Live on Showtime from The DC Armory in Washington, D.C.

New York, NY (March 28, 2016)  A three-fight series to crown a unified divisional champion will begin on Saturday, April 30, when WBC 168-pound champion Badou Jack defends his title against former longtime titlist Lucian Bute, and IBF Champion James DeGale risks his belt against mandated challenger Rogelio Medina in a SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING doubleheader live on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT) from the DC Armory in Washington D.C.

The winners will meet in a super middleweight world-title unification fight later this year.

Jack (20-1-1, 12 KOs) will make his second title defense after a breakthrough 2015 campaign in which he won the WBC belt from Anthony Dirrell and successfully defended against George Groves. The southpaw Bute (32-3, 25 KOs), a former IBF champion with nine defenses between 2007 and 2012, revived his career last November with a gutsy and inspired performance against DeGale.

“I’ve been training really hard for this fight and I’m excited to get in the ring,” said Jack. “I can’t wait to defend my title once again on April 30. The fans can expect to see an explosive and skillful performance from me come fight night. I believe I’m the best super middleweight in the world and that I have the skills to beat anyone I get in the ring with. I’m fully focused on Lucian Bute, but I know that a win can set up a massive fight against James DeGale and I’m going to deliver.”

“I’m thrilled to have this tremendous opportunity,” said Bute. “I was ringside for Badou Jack’s last two fights -- well deserved world title wins. He is a great champion. I plan to train hard and be in the best shape of my career on April 30. It’s my chance to win the WBC belt and become two-time world champion. I will win and give boxing fans a spectacular fight.”

DeGale (22-1, 14 KOs) will make his second title defense after an impressive 2015 in which he defeated Andre Dirrell to win the vacant IBF belt and topped Bute in a Fight of the Year candidate. The hard-hitting Medina (35-6, 29 KOs), the IBF’s mandatory challenger, has knocked out three consecutive opponents.

“I am delighted to be defending my world title on another great show in the United States,” said DeGale. “I won my belt in style in Boston and I’m looking forward to moving down the East Coast to the great city of Washington, D.C. It’s going to be a defining night in the super middleweight division as Badou Jack and myself look to set up a huge fight later in the year. I’m fully focused on Rogelio Medina. He’s a tough Mexican who earned his title shot. But trust me, no one is getting my world title.”

“This is such a great opportunity for me and I can’t wait to get in the ring,” said Medina. “I’ve worked so hard for this and I am going to make the most of it. Everyone who has seen me fight knows I leave it all in the ring and you can expect to see an all-out battle on April 30. I will be the new world champion.”

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by Mayweather Promotions and Interbox in association with Matchroom Boxing, are priced at $200, $100, $50 and $25, and are on sale now. To purchase tickets visit www.ticketmaster.com, Ticketmaster locations, or call (800) 745-3000.

“Mayweather Promotions is proud to bring another exciting night of boxing to the great boxing fans in my hometown of Washington, D.C.,” said Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions. “I’m really excited about the Badou Jack vs. Lucian Bute fight. It’s going to be a great fight. We know Bute is tough as nails and he’s coming to take the title away from Badou. Badou is going to have to be at his best to be able to beat Bute that night. The winner of that fight will set up a spectacular unification fight with the winner of the fight between British champion James DeGale and Mexican brawler ‘Porky’ Medina. DeGale can’t take Medina lightly if he wants the unification bout. It’s going to be a thrilling night of action at the DC Armory and on SHOWTIME.”

Badou Jack “The Ripper”, of Las Vegas by way of Stockholm, Sweden, captured the WBC 168-pound crown with a 12-round majority decision over previously unbeaten defending champion Anthony Dirrell last April 24. A former amateur standout who represented Gambia in the 2008 Olympics, Jack retained his belt against former world title challenger George Groves last Sept. 12 on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather’s final fight. Jack, who fights under the Mayweather Promotions banner, was an underdog against both Dirrell and Groves. The 6-foot-1, 32-year-old has won four in a row since a shocking first-round knockout loss to Derek Edwards in February 2014.

Bute, of Montreal, Canada by way of Romania, has been a super middleweight mainstay for the last decade. He has competed in 12 title fights since 2007, scoring seven knockouts in nine consecutive defenses of the IBF belt he won in 2007 in his adopted hometown of Montreal. During his title reign, the 36-year-old defeated the likes of Glen Johnson, Librado Andrade and Jean-Paul Mendy, but he lost the belt to Carl Froch in 2012 and a string of injuries kept him largely inactive over the next three years. Bute returned from a 19-month absence in August 2015 under new trainer Howard Grant, knocking out Andrea Di Luisa to set up the title shot against DeGale for the crown he once held. Bute stalked the switch-hitting DeGale with a relentless attack, turning in his most impressive performance in years in a close decision loss.

James “Chunky” DeGale, of London, England, won the vacant IBF belt in his U.S. debut last May by dropping Andre Dirrell twice on his way to a unanimous decision. The 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist then successfully defended it last November in a thrilling shootout with hometown favorite and former titlist Lucian Bute. The 30-year-old, who’s only blemish came in a majority decision in his 11th bout against then-unbeaten George Groves, will make his third consecutive start outside his native England as he looks to become a global power at 168 pounds.

Rogelio “Porky” Medina is a hard-hitting veteran with 30 knockouts in his 36 career wins. He’s knocked out three consecutive opponents, including a shocking third-round knockout of then-undefeated J’Leon Love in August, 2014. Medina, 27, has suffered six losses in 42 fights, although those defeats came against opponents with a combined record of 187-16-3, including four previously undefeated fighters.

In addition, Events DC has also named Washington, DC-headquartered, Brailsford & Dunlavey in collaboration with ADC Solutions and Kumi Construction Management as program management lead for the transformative arena project. Operated by Events DC, the approximately 5,000 seat venue will bring world-class entertainment and sports programing – while driving urban regeneration to the communities east of the Anacostia River.

“Events DC is energized about our partnership with Washington, DC local and internationally-recognized firms – including, Marshall Moya Design and ROSSETTI for design and Brailsford & Dunlavey with ADC Solutions and Kumi Construction Management for program management collaboration of the Entertainment and Sports Arena,” said Gregory A. O’Dell, president and chief executive officer of Events DC. “Bringing together their respective expertise, experience and assets and with our city partners, we are committed to creating an arena that offers Washington, DC residents and visitors a premier live entertainment and sports destination.”

Acting as an economic catalyst, Events DC plans to utilize the best and brightest while supporting local businesses and has established a 50% Certified Business Enterprise (CBE) set-aside for both architecture, engineering and program management contracts related to the arena project. Events DC has also mandated that 35% of the work performed on each of these contracts will be performed by Small Business Enterprises.

O’Dell further explained, “As the official convention and sports authority for the District, Events DC remains committed to enriching and activating all corners of the city with not only unforgettable experiences but also acting as an economic catalyst for the city. In addition to focusing on hiring CBEs in the coming months, we also plan to create employment opportunities for District residents.”

For the arena project, ROSSETTI and Marshall Moya Design have joined forces as The Washington Arena Design Partners JV to act as the architect of record and designer. The creative collaboration of both local and national perspectives and expertise will ultimately result in a broader range of innovative and imaginative thinking about integrating the new Entertainment and Sports Arena into the communities east of the Anacostia River.

Marshall Moya Design is a Washington, DC-based, multi-faceted architecture and design studio producing award-winning projects in the commercial, institutional, civic and cultural arenas. They have designed a number of iconic projects throughout our nation’s capital. These projects include The Howard Theatre, Chuck Brown Memorial, urban destinations such as Reunion Square in Southeast, elementary schools throughout the District and the new Student Center for the University of the District of Columbia, on target to be the first LEED Platinum student union on the east coast and one of only two in the country. Current projects include the new home for D.C. United and work for MGM Resorts International.

“The renaissance of Washington, DC is very important to the mission of our practice. We have been involved with several high-profile projects throughout the city that have been catalysts for growth and development. As a native Washingtonian, I have witnessed our city’s evolution; we are now on track to make DC one of the most vibrant and exciting places to live in the world. This sports and entertainment venue will be a major part of this effort,” said Michael Marshall, design director and principal of Marshall Moya Design.

ROSSETTI, which has a worldwide practice that specializes in sports arena and entertainment center design – is most notable for the LA Lakers Headquarters and Practice Facility, the renovation and rebranding of the Cleveland Cavaliers Practice Facility and the renovation of the iconic TD Garden.

“ROSSETTI is thrilled to be a design partner with Events DC, Monumental Sports and Entertainment and the Ward 8 community for this incredibly unique sports complex. We have seen how sports facilities and programs become community assets, and we believe this new complex will be capable of catalyzing new development through outreach programs that promote a stewardship and engagement between all parties,” said Matt Rossetti, FAIA, president of ROSSETTI.

Washington, DC-headquartered Brailsford & Dunlavey in local collaboration with ADC Solutions and Kumi Construction Management will focus exclusively on the planning and project management of the arena project – which will include compliance with goals, timelines and budgets set-forth. Notable DC projects include parks and recreation center renovations with the District of Columbia’s Department of Parks and Recreation, Department of General Services’ public schools modernization and Howard University’s Interdisciplinary Research Building. Past and current Events DC projects include Nationals Park, the first LEED-certified major professional sports stadium in the United States and the current RFK Stadium-Armory Campus redevelopment project.

“It’s a privilege for Brailsford & Dunlavey, along with our partners ADC Management Solutions and Kumi Construction Management, to play a role in this transformational project for the District and particularly for Ward 8,” said Chris Dunlavey, president of Brailsford & Dunlavey. “It’s a responsibility that we take very seriously. Our objective as program manager is to ensure that this project meets the requirements of a top-quality entertainment and training facility on time and within budget, so that it will serve as both a source of pride in the community and a catalyst for economic development.”

The project will become the future practice facility for the Washington Wizards, home court of the Washington Mystics and a premier entertainment venue in the District. The arena is expected to attract more than 380,000 annual new residents and visitors per year to Congress Heights and produce more than 600 construction jobs and 300 permanent jobs for the arena. PRESS RELEASE

10th Annual Asics Capitol Hill Volleyball Classic Returns to DC With Record 1,000+ Teams, February 13 – 15, 2016

Washington, DC (February 12, 2016) In 2016, the Presidents Day long weekend coincides with Valentine’s Day, an ideal time for more than 12,000 young female athletes who love volleyball to compete at the 10th annual Asics Capitol Hill Volleyball Classic. This tournament is pure girl power: more than 1,000 teams will play before 35,000 spectators inside the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

The event and sports marketplace is expected to generate an economic impact of $19.2 million for Washington, DC, February 13-15, 2016.

“Events DC is honored to celebrate the monumental 10th anniversary of the Asics Capitol Hill Volleyball Classic Tournament at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center alongside our partner, Destination DC,” said Gregory A. O’Dell, president and chief executive officer of Events DC. “Over the past ten years, this annual three-day event has energized Washington, DC during a traditionally slow visitation season and has inspired spending across all corners of the city from retail to restaurants and attractions with steady growth resulting in a more than 650% attendance increase since the inaugural tournament in 2006. We applaud the tournament on their resounding success and this significant milestone. We look forward to their continued growth and visibility on a global platform.”

The tenth annual competition will take over all five Exhibit Halls and the Ballroom at the Convention Center. The 2007 tournament required 18 courts. The 2016 tournament will activate 120 courts hosting 3,600 matches overseen by 212 referees.

“By hosting more than 75,800 players, coaches, scouts, spectators and sponsors over three days, the Asics Capitol Hill Volleyball Classic achieves citywide convention status. The 2016 tournament is on track to book 27,653 total hotel room nights, creating a major impact in the city during the February need period,” said Elliott L. Ferguson, president and CEO of Destination DC, the official tourism and marketing office for the nation’s capital.

“Over the last decade, we’ve grown our team tournament from a small regional gathering into a must-attend national event filling a convention center. In 2016, our players will use 2,000 Molten volleyballs, wear 22,464 knee pads and consume 25,000 Gatorade Recovery Protein Shakes,” said Bonnie Goldberg, executive director for Capitol Hill Volleyball Classic. “The 2016 Capitol Hill Volley Classic is our tenth opportunity to thank the volleyball community who travel to Washington, DC for the love of the game.”

The tournament kick-starts DC’s calendar of family-friendly sporting events. Events including the 2016 Men’s Atlantic Coast Conference Basketball in Washington, DC, the inaugural DC Bike Ride and the 11th annual Events DC Nation’s Triathlon drive city revenue. “Many attendees extend their visit, making time to explore the capital between and after sporting activities, subsequently leaving a measurable impact on District hotels, restaurants and attractions,” said Ferguson.

The 10th anniversary tournament begins at 9 a.m. daily. Weekend passes are $40, $30 if purchased in advance; daily passes are $15. Tickets can be purchased at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center or online. Weekend passes will be sold onsite daily, starting at 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 13.

Luis Ortiz Set to Face Tony Thompson For the WBA Interim Heavyweight World Title

PRESS RELEASE

Luis Ortiz Set to Face Tony Thompson for the WBA Interim Heavyweight World Title

LOS ANGELES (Feb. 8, 2016) - Fresh from a stunning knockout of Bryant "By-By" Jennings and eager to continue his quest to be the best heavyweight in the sport, WBA Interim Heavyweight World Champion Luis "The Real King Kong" Ortiz (24-0, 21 KOs) will make his first title defense of 2016 when he faces former world title challenger Tony "The Tiger" Thompson (40-6, 27 KOs) in 12-round main event at the DC Armory, in Washington D.C. on Saturday, March 5 and televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark® beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Opening up the live telecast, top contender and 2008 Olympian Sadam "World Kid" Ali (22-0, 13 KOs) will face former WBA Super Lightweight World Champion Jessie Vargas (26-1, 9 KOs) in a 12-round co-main event for the vacant WBO Welterweight World Championship.

"This fight is just another stepping stone on my path to becoming the unified heavyweight world champion," said Luis Ortiz. "I came to the United States to chase my American Dream and fighting at the nation's capital is a dream come true. My life is coming full circle, and I know that this fight will put me a step closer to achieving everything I have worked so hard for in my career."

"I'm happy to be back on HBO fighting for another world title," said Tony Thompson. "If you look at my competition and his [Ortiz], it's not even close. This isn't the amateurs. I'm going to use my experience as a professional to take him places he's never been. Odlanier Solis was a great Cuban amateur but he was also an Olympic Gold Medalist, and I beat him twice. Ortiz thinks he has it tough. I've been avoided for my entire career. Just about all my fights have been on short notice and in foreign countries. If I fought the guys Ortiz fought, I'd be undefeated too. If Ortiz is King Kong, I'm Godzilla; Godzilla coming to whoop some ass!"

"Luis Ortiz and Sadam Ali are two top fighters in our sport today and both will impress audiences in the ring on March 5 in their first fights of 2016," said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. "Luis demonstrated in his brilliant knockout over Bryant Jennings in December that he is an elite fighter that can dominate even the toughest opponent. Sadam Ali is a phenomenal fighter, and I think he is the future of the welterweight division, which is very exciting."

"Tony Thompson is a very talented hard punching contender who has beaten David Price and Odlanier Solis twice each over the last 2 years," said Leon R. Margules, President of Warriors Boxing and Promotions. "Luis Ortiz will have his hands full on March 5 in clearly his toughest challenge to date, and in Tony's hometown. We are very excited he is getting this opportunity."

"We are excited to televise a heavyweight knockout machine like Luis Ortiz in a tough bout on a big stage against Tony Thompson on March 5 in our nation's capital," said Peter Nelson, Executive Vice President, HBO Sports. "The winner will take a significant step up in the public's esteem. The Ali-Vargas co-feature is a terrific 50-50 fight at welterweight that has fans eager to see who will come out on top."

"To fight for the world championship is something that I have been training and fighting for my whole career," said Sadam Ali. "I am grateful for the opportunity and promise all my fans I will not let them down. On March 5, I will have my hands raised up in victory as the new WBO Welterweight World Champion."

"This is a different Jessie Vargas," said Jessie Vargas. "I learned a lot from my last fight and I am ready to prove that I am still a world champion. I'm coming back with a Vengeance!"

"Jessie Vargas knows what's at stake this time around" said Carl Moretti, VP, Top Rank. "He plans to take full advantage of this opportunity and we fully expect his hand to be raised as the winner in what promises to be a great fight."

Tickets priced at $25, $50, $75, and $100, plus applicable taxes, fees and services charges, go on sale on Wednesday, February 10 at 10:00 a.m. ET and available online at www.ticketmaster.com and all Ticketmaster locations, by calling (800) 745-3000. The DC Armory Box Office will be open on fight night only from 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. ET.

Luis Ortiz vs. Tony Thompson is a 12-round heavyweight fight for the WBA Interim Heavyweight Title presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with King Kong Boxing and Warriors Boxing and Promotions. Sadam Ali vs. Jessie Vargas is a 12-round fight for the vacant WBO Welterweight World Championship presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Top Rank. The event is sponsored by Cerveza Tecate, BORN BOLD. The DC Armory doors open at 3:00 p.m. ET, and the HBO Boxing After Dark telecast begins live at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.

A native of Camaguey, Cuba who now makes his home in Miami, Luis "The Real King Kong" Ortiz was one of boxing's breakout stars of 2015. The 36-year-old southpaw has scored three knockouts in three fights, each bigger than the one before it. Most notably, Ortiz defended his WBA Interim Heavyweight World Championship via seventh-round technical knockout of top contender Bryant "By-By" Jennings on Dec. 19. It was a win that marked Ortiz as a must see for fight fans around the world and securing him a place on heavyweight pound-for-pound list. A decorated amateur in his home country, Ortiz, became a professional in 2010 and has gone on to win multiple titles including the WBC FecarBox Heavyweight, the WBA Fedelatin Heavyweight, the WBO Latino Heavyweight and the WBC Latino Heavyweight titles during his undefeated streak.

A skilled boxer from Washington DC, Tony "The Tiger" Thompson is a former world title challenger who has taken tough challenges on his way to the top of the heavyweight division. A professional since 2000, Thompson has earned USA Maryland Sate Heavyweight Title, the WBC Continental Americas Heavyweight Title and the WBO Inter-Continental Heavyweight title before his first attempt at the unified heavyweight world championship against Wladimir Klitschko in 2008. Although unsuccessful, Thompson continued fighting and remained undefeated until his second clash against Klitschko in 2012. Since then, the heavyweight titlist has stayed active and last held the WBC Continental Americas Heavyweight Title in 2015. Now, Thompson is ready to challenge Ortiz for the WBA Interim Heavyweight World Title on his way to become a world champion.

A member of the 2008 United States Olympic boxing team, and the first Arab-American to represent the U.S. at the Olympics, Brooklyn's Sadam "World Kid" Ali has been sailing up the welterweight ladder since a big year in 2013. Ali has had back-to-back title victories over Michael "Cold Blood" Clark, where he won the NABO Welterweight Title; Jeremy "Hollywood" Bryan, winning the WBO Inter-Continental Welterweight Title; Luis Carlos "El Potro" Abregu, defending his titles and giving the experienced fighter his second loss; and Francisco "Chia" Santana where he earned the WBA International Welterweight Title, the 27-year-old with remarkable speed and power is ready for his world title shot against former world champion Jessie Vargas.

Las Vegas standout Jessie Vargas has been following a path to the top similar to that of Ali, as he's turned back several top foes since making his professional debut in 2008. A former WBA world champion at 140 pounds who defeated Khabib "The Hawk" Allakhverdiev, Anton "The Pick Hammer" Novikov and Antonio DeMarco in super lightweight title fights, Vargas lost a controversial 2015 fight to Timothy "Desert Storm" Bradley for the WBO Int
