50 Ways to Leave Your Lecture: Active Engagement Strategies that Motivate Reluctant Learners
All teachers must spend some class time doing direct instruction, but this is the time when it can be most difficult for students to stay engaged. This lively and interactive session will provide teachers and staff developers with dozens of simple "brain-based" strategies they can use right away to keep students of varying abilities and learning styles involved and motivated and help them retain more. Participants will walk away with strategies they can try tomorrow to break up direct instruction and increase engagement, motivation, and student understanding of content in ways that appeal to typically reluctant students.

When Consequences Don't Work: Succeeding with At-Risk Youth
Consequences are often a last resort that doesn't resort to much! Once teachers have exhausted their hierarchy of consequences, how then are they to proceed with students whose behavior is unchanged no matter what consequence is given? In this fast-paced, interactive session, participants will receive a dozen practical, eye-opening strategies that can be used immediately to manage difficult student behaviors more effectively. Learn when and how to use consequences, while modeling respectful communication, teaching personal responsibility, and deescalating confrontations. And learn how to "break the cycle of misbehavior" with students for whom nothing else works.

How do we work effectively with students who struggle to pay attention and who rarely participate? This fun and interactive session will provide teachers and staff developers with practical, take-away strategies that will help get their least focused learners more involved without creating confrontations. Learn three ways to get and maintain student attention. Walk away with eight simple yet innovative techniques for putting kids "on the hook" for participating, without potentially humiliating them.
