Statue Unveiling Sunday

NEWS RELEASE

Statue Unveiling Sunday

Rosemont, IL (June 2, 2016) It’s only fitting that the memory of the man whom many consider the father of Rosemont be honored on Father’s Day.

Residents, Village officials and others will gather at Village Hall at 10 a.m. Sunday, June 19, Father’s Day, to witness the unveiling of a 16-ft. tall base and bronze statue of Rosemont’s founder and first Mayor, the late Donald E. Stephens. Village Hall is located on Devon Avenue west of River Road.

Work on the $300,000 privately-funded project began a year ago. The sculptors are Omri Amrany and Gary Tillery of Rotblatt-Amrany Studios in Highwood. Northern Builders, Inc. is the general contractor.

The statue will be set within a small park at the east entrance of Village Hall. The statue area will include a waterfall and brick wall where the late mayor’s name and an inscription will be located. The statue will face toward the entrance to Village Hall and will present a feeling of movement. The sculptors are known for creating statues of this type having done the famed Michael Jordan statue in front of Chicago’s United Center that shows the basketball great flying through the air.

When current Mayor Brad Stephens, Don Stephens youngest son, visited the Rotblatt-Amrany Studios in January, he called the work done at that point “phenomenal.” “I started on this while he was still alive,” said the current Mayor. He added that after his father died in 2007, he and a group of friends of the late Mayor began the process of choosing a location for the statue.

“This is right outside Village Hall,” said Brad Stephens. “He did a few things there while he was around here.”

The statue unveiling is part of a series of events being held throughout 2016 to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Village of Rosemont.
